Nürnberg has gotten its first bid book for the title of European Capital of Culture 2025 off the ground and submitted it to the Kulturstiftung der Länder in Berlin. The creation of the bid book was an intense process involving many people’s collaboration: citizens of Nürnberg, artists from Nürnberg and the Europäische Metropolregion Nürnberg, initiatives, associations and organisations in Nürnberg and the region, experts from a wide range of topics and, not least, employees of the city administration. Using the means of art and culture, we seek answers to important questions about the future of our city and of Europe and hope to offer the people of Nürnberg and all its visitors a colourful, gripping and exciting year.
Nürnberg is applying for the European Capital of Culture title in 2025, when Germany will take its turn as the host country.
We want to host the most important cultural project to take place in Germany over the next few years. Using the means of art and culture, we want to find answers to urgent problems of our time, further grow Nürnberg and the region, and highlight the diversity and commonalities of cultural heritage in Europe. The aim is a better understanding and the togetherness of all people in Europe.
What is Nürnberg? Is it bratwurst, gingerbread and Dürer? Is it a medieval city, the city of the Nazi party rallies, a centre of knowledge and research, a city of human rights? And what will Nürnberg look like in the future? Nürnberg represents the highs and lows of European history like no other city. How do we want to treat this legacy when today almost half of all Nürnbergers have an international history? The European Capital of Culture 2025 is the opportunity for Nürnberg to look to the future and to dare to do something new – without forgetting the past. PAST FORWARD!
