Victoria (Gozo)
Malta

In the Maltese archipelago, Victoria is the main urban centre of Gozo, concentrating the island’s administrative, cultural and historical life.
Its origins date back to antiquity, with continuous settlement through Roman, medieval and early modern periods. The fortified Citadel dominates the city and reflects centuries of strategic military and religious importance, particularly under the Knights of St. John. The city’s structure and identity are inseparable from this defensive and symbolic role within the central Mediterranean.
Shaped by rural traditions, colonial rule and the pressures of modernisation, Victoria presents a compact urban form where vernacular architecture, baroque churches and modest civic buildings prevail. The 20th century brought gradual social change rather than rupture, with limited industrialisation and a strong attachment to local identity. Today, the city balances heritage conservation, tourism and everyday life, remaining traditional in scale and character while slowly adapting to contemporary cultural and economic demands.
