Larnaka

Cyprus

Larnaka, known as the Ancient Kition, was shaped by crossing civilizations and attracted many visitors along the centuries, from colonizers to traders, conquerors, tourists but also refugees from the Northern part of the island, who now make up 53% of the city’s population.

Larnaka used to be the city of consulates, where different communities – Greek and Turkish Cypriots, Latinos, and Jewish, among others – lived together. Due to its diverse demographic status, it has become not only a diverse cultural centre but also a religious meeting point for Christians, Muslims, and Jewish, and this can be evidenced through the many religious monuments that exist, like the Hala Sultan Tekke, St Lazarus Church and the Larnaca Synagogue.

The city is also rich in outstanding natural treasures, such as the Zinobia shipwreck and the Salt Lake that is declared a Natural 2000 site and visited by thousands of Greater Flamingos each year.

ECOC

The city has started its preparation for the ECoC candidacy in spring 2022.

Since then, it has established the Larnaka 2030 as a legal entity and has recruited the team that will manage the candidacy. From November 2022 onwards, Larnaka 2030 has started a cultural mapping of the city and launched a public consultation process, inviting artists, cultural operators as well as citizens to imagine and co-create the city’s long term cultural strategy and its bid.

The Organization

The non-profit organization “Larnaka 2030 – European Capital of Culture Candidate City” was established in 2022 and runs the city’s candidacy for ECoC 2030.
