Jerez de la Frontera
Spain

Jerez de la Frontera is a 212.000 inhabitants city, located in the region Andalusia and in the province of Cadiz.
We are the South of the South. Our territory is bathed by the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, next to the Guadalquivir River, and with privileged views of the mountains of Cadiz. Jerez is an ancient city, a mosaic of cultures, and recognized for its three universal icons: sherry wine, horses and flamenco.
The legacy of Phoenicians, Romans and Muslims has traced the design of a city of unique architectural heritage, with a monumental city center declared of historic-artistic Interest. A city center with palace houses and old wineries. We are the capital of the sherry wine region.
A city with a recognized success in the organization of major events, it is also a preferred tourist destination in Andalusia due to its differentiating features, a privileged enclave, excellent connections, more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year, unique attractions and permanent cultural activity.
It is also a favorite destination for its gastronomic excellence, which combines tradition and innovation and in which our internationally recognized sherry wines have a prominent role.
ECOC
Our candidacy is a collective challenge reinforced by our city’s commitment to cultural exchange, social cohesion and artistic expression.
Our candidacy for the European Capital of Culture not only aims to stimulate economic activity, but also to strengthen our narratives and our sense of belonging.
Jerez, a city steeped in the ethereal embrace of history and tradition, stands as a veritable crossroads of cultures, weaving together continents and narratives.
Our rich tapestry of heritage spans from the passionate rhythms of flamenco; the power, elegance and grace of our Andalusian horses, to the unique dimension of our sherry wine.
The region has historically been a melting pot of cultures, from its name “Sharish de la Frontera”; which unites Muslim and Christian denominations, to its cultural and artistic legacy. Every street, every square, and every monument tell a story that enriches our identity and reflects the Arab, Roman, and Greek influences.
Jerez is much more than a city: it is a beacon of inclusion, cooperation, and cultural pride, ready to share its treasures with the world and foster a brighter, united future for all.
It is with this vision that we present the candidacy of Jerez de la Frontera for the European Capital of Culture 2031.
