Debrecen

Hungary

Debrecen is Hungary’s second largest city, the commercial, administrative, cultural, and educational center of the eastern part of the country.

Debrecen has served as the nation’s capital twice, in 1849 and at the turn 1944-45, respectively. Each time represented dramatic episodes of revolution and war, when the Reformed Big Church and the College became iconic venues of momentous historic occasions. Today, Debrecen exudes the feel of a pleasant provincial town with its colorful piazzas and spacious parks. The presence of several multinationals as well as the university, with a student population of 30.000, including thousands of overseas students, lends a cosmopolitan atmosphere to the city.

This is further accentuated by international sporting events and boisterous festivals of cultural and gastronomic interest. Debrecen is a place where state-of-the-art metropolitan facilities are in close proximity to the peace and serenity of nature. The cozy downtown “hidey-holes” are supplemented with the unique natural beauty of Nagyerdő (Great Forest) and the nearby Hortobágy National Park.

Debrecen is a former candidate city for the European Capital of Culture in Hungary in 2023.

The slogan “Sharing Horizons” encapsulated the concept of the programme that stood for an active cooperation with Europe. It was a strong metaphor for freedom, open-mindedness and interaction. A clear invitation or even a call to open up for a step-by-step collective paradigm shift. A process of thinking and discovering. It only works through a two – or rather multiple – way dialogue. For us: with the support of Europe, for Europeans: by discovering us. The bidding process has been developed by ECoC Debrecen 2023 Nonprofit Ltd.

The ECoC title has been awarded to Veszprém.
